Today’s police graduation ceremony at Rokeby will see an additional 18 constables join our distinguished Tasmanian Police Service.
We came to office promising to restore police numbers to 1233 after former Labor Police Minister David O’Byrne callously axed 108 officers from the frontline. Today’s graduation confirms the rebuild is on track, bringing police numbers to 1212 FTE.
From next week, the 18 new graduates will be on the beat, serving to enforce the law and protect the Tasmanian community.
A strong police service is essential to tackling crime, and the community can be assured the Hodgman Liberal Government is tough on crime and committed to keeping Tasmanians safe.
It’s a far cry from Labor’s approach of cutting police numbers and blocking mandatory sentencing for those who sexually assault children, assault frontline workers and evade police in cars.
I would like to congratulate each and every one of these graduates on this achievement and wish them well in their careers with Tasmania Police.
