The Hodgman Liberal Government will bring forward funding to immediately commence a planning study and design work to address safety concerns on the East Derwent Highway at Geilston Bay.
The Government will look for a solution to address the Highway narrowing to two lanes at Geilston Bay.
With the economy booming and an increasing number of new houses and businesses in the area, it is clear that the current road situation needs work to accommodate both the increased activity and to ensure the safety of local residents.
Pembroke Liberal James Walker has brought the community's concerns to Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding's attention and today’s announcement to bring forward this funding is a great win for the community and is the first step in addressing these concerns.
The planning study and design work will focus on a duplication that will accommodate more traffic, as well as the junctions with the Highway and other safety and efficiency solutions such as traffic lights and signage.
The study cost will be $150,000 with work to begin immediately, and the full value of the construction project to be significantly more.
Fixing this problem will be a major investment and this commitment to commence the design work is effectively the beginning of a very significant project for the Eastern Shore of Hobart.
There has been strong growth in Pembroke and these concerns are the result of our growing economy, and I am very pleased to stand with James Walker and everyone in the community to welcome this funding.
