Paying tribute to our teachers

This World Teachers’ Day I would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to all Tasmanian teachers and support staff for the positive and important role you play each and every day in shaping the future of our young people.

As Minister for Education and Training I have come to understand the role of a teacher is sometimes challenging, often very rewarding, and also incredibly influential.

As teachers you share the Government’s commitment to ensuring our children have the best possible start in life, through quality education from the early years right through to adult learners.

We value your work to encourage and inspire students to reach their full potential, and we applaud your role in influencing the significant improvements we are seeing across our education system.

Since coming to Government we have seen improvements in NAPLAN results taking us closer to Australian mean scores.

We’ve also seen a 57 per cent increase in enrolments at the first 12 high schools to extend to Years 11 and 12 since 2014, and consistent improvements in retention to year 12 and students gaining their TCE.

In addition, there are now more teachers working across Government schools in Tasmania, with a rise of 113.17 full time equivalent (FTE) from 4372.35 FTE teachers employed in 2015–16 compared to 4259.18 FTE in 2014 -2015.

This is excellent news for our teaching workforce, our schools and, most importantly, for our students.

We remain committed to working with all our educators to further improve learning outcomes and employment opportunities for young Tasmanians.
