Paying tribute to Mrs Doone Kennedy AO

I would like to pay tribute to Hobart's first and only female Lord Mayor, Mrs Doone Kennedy AO, who passed away yesterday aged 87.

Mrs Kennedy served as an Alderman of the Hobart City Council from 1982 to 1999 and was Lord Mayor for a decade from 1986 to 1996.

After leaving Council, Mrs Kennedy continued to work tirelessly for the city of Hobart, assisting several charities and community organisations until she passed away.

She was deservedly made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1994 for service to Local Government and the community.

Mrs Kennedy was someone I admired greatly and I was thrilled when she endorsed me when I ran for and was elected to the Hobart City Council in 2007.

She was a strong, courageous woman who was prepared to navigate unchartered waters as the first female Lord Mayor at a time in our society when women in senior leadership roles were uncommon.

Mrs Kennedy has left a lasting legacy, and I am grateful for her immense contribution to the City of Hobart. I express my sincerest condolences to Mrs Kennedy's family on her passing.
