Parliament to continue its firm focus on law and order

This week in Parliament, the Hodgman Liberal Government will again focus on implementing policies designed to keep the Tasmanian community safe.

Our tough new consorting laws to crack down on serious and organised crime will go before the Upper House. These proposed new laws bring us in line with other jurisdictions, and will act to stop and deter organised criminals from establishing, maintaining and expanding criminal networks in Tasmania.

Meanwhile in the Lower House we will be debating a Bill to improve and toughen Tasmania’s existing unexplained wealth legislation.

This will provide our law enforcement officers with additional tools in the fight against organised crime organisations.

The proposed amendments to the Crime (Confiscation of Profits) Act 1993 clarifies that wealth provisions will also apply to a club or association, how evidence can be used, and addresses an issue in the current legislation in relation to the time-frame in which applications to be made in the Supreme Court.

The Government also plans to introduce legislation to provide more protection to victims of family violence.

This Bill is one of the Hodgman Government’s election commitments, and will insert a new offence of persistent family violence in the Criminal Code.

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s strong law and order agenda will keep Tasmanians safe, and I implore the Labor Party to side with the Tasmanian community and support our Bills.
