Over 200 per cent rise in public housing approvals

The Hodgman Liberal Government is working hard to ensure all Tasmanians have access to safe and affordable housing, and ABS figures released today show positive growth in regards to dwelling approvals.

Public housing approvals in the year to May 2018 skyrocketed by 219.4 per cent from the previous year. This same period saw a 24.6 per cent increase in private sector approvals.

This is evidence of the Government’s commitment to create more affordable housing for vulnerable Tasmanians.

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s Affordable Housing Action Plan - Stage 2 will result in an additional 1500 new homes, and builds on Stage 1 of the Plan, which will result in more than 900 new homes for Tasmanians in need.

This will not only help address Tasmania’s housing shortage, but is creating jobs and further strengthening the State’s economy.

Dwelling unit approvals in Tasmania were up 4.9 per cent when compared to the same time the previous year, in trend terms.

The nominal value of residential building approvals in Tasmania also grew in the year to May 2018, and was 25.8 per cent higher than the previous year.
