Old school redevelopment to deliver new affordable homes, 120 jobs

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to improving access to affordable housing for vulnerable Tasmanians.

Under our Affordable Housing Strategy, we are partnering with both the community sector and the private sector to build new homes for Tasmanians in need, which has the added benefit of creating more jobs in the State’s building industry.

Today, I was pleased to announce that CatholicCare Tasmania has been chosen to redevelop the former Brent Street Primary School site in Glenorchy.

This affordable housing redevelopment will inject more than $16 million in economic activity in Tasmania and create more than 120 jobs in construction.

The project will deliver 25 new affordable rental homes for Tasmanians eligible for social housing and 20 house and land packages for low income Tasmanians.

CatholicCare is expected to build an additional 30 private homes on the site.

Under our Home Share program, the house and land packages will help 20 Tasmanian families who would normally be unable to obtain finance the opportunity to become home owners through a shared equity model with the Director of Housing.

The rental properties, meanwhile, will include three that are purpose designed and built to make them suitable for tenants living with disability.

In a great outcome for the old school site, this land will now become a centre of affordable housing options for many Tasmanians.

CatholicCare is also continuing its successful partnership with Tasmanian building company Wilson Homes to build the new affordable homes.

Development approvals are already in place, and CatholicCare is looking forward to commencing civil construction on the site soon.
