Labor's farcical series of contradictory statements over Okehampton Bay proves that they simply can't be trusted to stand up for the salmon industry and jobs in regional Tasmania.
In an extraordinary statement, ABC Mornings host, Leon Compton, has this morning publicly named and shamed the Labor Party for being in hiding over Okehampton Bay.
Mr Compton revealed that on Friday he requested an interview with a Labor MP, any Labor MP, to state Labor’s position on Okehampton Bay. Labor refused that request and subsequent requests for 5 days.
The best Tasmanians got was whinging Josh Willie on the weekend saying a position on Okehampton Bay was "months" away.
Clearly, there is a massive party room brawl underway within Labor over Okehampton Bay. If Labor even has to have an internal argument about whether to support independent science and jobs in regional Tasmania, then it’s clear they’ve learnt nothing from their four disastrous years in bed with the Greens and would do another minority government deal in a heartbeat.
It’s also interesting that Labor’s position on Okehampton Bay won’t be announced by Bryan Green. Usually, it is the domain of the party leader to make major policy announcements.
He has clearly been flirting with the Greens on an each-way bet while abandoning salmon workers in regional Tasmania.
The bottom line: this episode proves, if given the chance, Labor will sell out the salmon industry to keep the Greens happy, just like they sold out the forest industry.
