Northern Flood Recovery Committee launched

A northern Regional Flood Recovery Committee was launched today to help individuals, families and communities rebuild and recover from the recent devastating floods in Tasmania.

Coordinator of the Tasmanian Flood Recovery Taskforce, Commander Peter Edwards, said the decision to set up the committee followed a recent meeting with the Northern Tasmanian Councils.

“The northern Regional Flood Recovery Committee will play a key role in the community-led recovery,” Commander Edwards said.

“The rebuilding, recovery and strengthening of flood-affected communities is locally and community driven.

“It is crucial for communities to lead their own recovery at their own pace and the northern Regional Flood Recovery Committee will be central to that process.

Mayor Craig Perkins of Meander Valley Council will Chair the committee and Mayor Greg Howard, Dorset Council will be the Deputy Chair.

“This regional committee will help ensure that the affected communities can get the help they need to get back on their feet as soon as possible,” Commander Edwards said.

Mayor Perkins reiterated the need for the recovery effort to be coordinated at a regional level and involve all levels of government.

“The floods have had multiple effects across economic, personal and community levels, and this has occurred across council boundaries,” he said.

“Through the committee, we will be working together to help our communities through the recovery journey.”

The Regional Flood Recovery Committee met for the first time today at Launceston Police Headquarters. The Committee includes members of the Tasmanian Flood Recovery Taskforce members and representatives of State Government departments.

The setting up of the northern Regional Flood Recovery Committee follows the first meeting of the North West Regional Flood Recovery Committee on Tuesday (21 June 2016).
