The Tasmanian shellfish industry will have access to the best possible testing facilities with the opening of the upgraded biotoxin testing facility at Analytical Services Tasmania.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has invested $1.2 million for the facility’s upgrade, which will provide the highest standard of testing for oysters and mussels, and other fisheries including rock lobster, abalone and scallop in Tasmania for the first time, with samples no longer required to be sent interstate.
The upgrade will provide the service needed for the $200 million wild fisheries industry in Tasmania to maintain and grow its high value export products, and ensure a quality product fit for local, national and international dining tables.
The upgrade is a collaboration between the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council, Oysters Tasmania and the Hodgman Government, and is a great practical example of this Government’s comprehensive AgriFood Plan in action
This includes working with industry to transition to the new Shellfish Market Access Program (ShellMAP) that will ensure a modern approach to working in partnership with shellfish growers on market access, quality assurance and food safety.
