New Road Safety Action Plan Released

The Liberal Government is committed to implementing a multi-faceted road safety program to target road safety challenges in a focused, effective and integrated manner.

It is my firm belief that no Tasmanian should be killed or injured on our roads and we have to strive towards a zero road toll in Tasmania.

The Government, through the Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC), has developed the Third Action Plan 2014-2016 which is the final Action Plan under the current Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2007-2016. The Third Action Plan includes a suite of initiatives, primarily funded by the Road Safety Levy, to help combat the State's road toll.

Work will soon commence on the development of a new 10-year road safety strategy for Tasmania, which will aim to continue the long-term downwards trend in serious road casualties.

The new strategy will continue to adopt Safe System principles that are based on best practice in road safety and include targeted, evidence-based initiatives.

Based on crash statistics, our areas of focus continue to be run-off road crashes, speed, drink-driving, inexperience and motorcycle crashes.

The Liberal Government is delivering on our election commitments to improve road safety, especially for vulnerable road users like cyclists and motorcyclists, which are included in the Third Action Plan:

  • Installing motorcycle safety infrastructure treatments on the newly named Great Eastern Drive;
  • Installing cyclists warning signage on popular cycling routes;
  • Increase support for the Learner Driver Mentoring Program and Driver Mentoring Tasmania;
  • Support the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program in secondary schools;
  • Review motorcycle training and safety programs;
  • Speed limit adjustments for novice drivers;
  • Develop a strong Share the Road public education campaign to better protect vulnerable road users; and
  • Consider implementation of a minimum passing distance for cyclists, taking into account Tasmanian road conditions.

We look forward to making more announcements on the progress of these initiatives in the coming months.
