New on-the-job learning for student teachers

Tasmanian teaching students will have an opportunity to work full-time in our Government schools during their final year of study and gain a guaranteed job through the second initiative announced under the Hodgman Liberal Government’s Developing Our Workforce Strategy.

Forty positions will be available to University of Tasmania Teacher Education students in the first year of the Teacher Intern Placement Program, which is designed to give student teachers an alternative final year study option to better prepare them for work in our Government schools.

This opportunity will be on offer to our high performing students, who demonstrate a commitment to teaching in Tasmania after graduation, ensuring our brightest minds are inspiring our students.

The successful applicants will receive:

  • A $15,000 cash incentive;
  • Full-time work alongside experienced teachers in our Government schools;
  • A guaranteed job at the successful completion of the program;
  • Consideration for a Limited Authority to Teach from Term 3 in the final year of study;
  • Access to additional professional development and learning, as well as support and mentorship from current teachers;
  • Participation in the Department’s induction program designed specifically for graduate teachers;
  • Use of a teacher laptop and access to the Department’s network; and
  • Accommodation and/or travel support where applicable.

The Hodgman Liberal Government has a long-term Plan to lift education standards and educational outcomes in Tasmania.

The Developing our Workforce Strategy, undertaken as a partnership project between the State Government and University of Tasmania through the Underwood Centre of Educational Attainment, is a great step to improving education in Tasmania.

The strategy provides $4.2 million from the Better Schools Tasmania Agreement (Gonski) to fund additional opportunities for teachers and education staff to better develop their skills, to ensure we have the best and brightest minds inspiring our students.

By developing and supporting Tasmania's education workforce we are investing in the future of Tasmania as a whole.
