Today, it was my pleasure to officially open the New Norfolk High School's upgraded Materials, Design and Technology facilities.
Students now have access to one of the most sophisticated technology learning areas in Tasmania that will equip them with new skills for an emerging job market.
This $500,000 upgrade includes new computers, software and routers, to assist students with design and drawing.
There's also a Computer Numerically Controlled booth, electronic smart board, woodturning booth, new metal and woodworking equipment and upgrades of the basics like benches, tools and lighting.
Importantly, for the first time, students can use computer driven routers that are capable of shaping a variety of commercial products and materials such as soft metals, brass, stainless steel, timber and stone.
This means students can create, design and produce a finished product from their one-stop workshop.
This is a great boost for all the Year 7 and 8 students who do MDT, and the great number of students who choose to study this as an elective in Year 9 and 10.
I would like to thank GPJ Architects and builders CDC Development Tas Pty Ltd for their fantastic work in bringing this refurbishment to life.
I wish all the MDT students the all the best with their exciting endeavours in this new refurbished facility.
