Netting goals for women's sport

Women’s sport will be the big winner out of a new partnership between the Tasmanian Government and Collingwood Football Club to invest in netball in Tasmania.

Netball is a high participation sport in Tasmania, with over 6,500 registered participants, and this agreement will further increase grassroots participation while developing pathways into the Suncorp Super Netball league, the top level of Australia’s netball competition.

The agreement will also bring a Suncorp Super Netball  game to the Silverdome in Launceston each year, which is great news for netball fans.

This year's game will be held at the Silverdome on April 30, between the Magpies and the Queensland Firebirds.

Under the partnership, there will also be:

  • One annual National Netball league pre-season camp held in Tasmania;
  • Opportunities for talented Tasmanian players and squads to train at Collingwood facilities with the Magpies and attend National Netball league matches;
  • Magpies Netball coaches and players will participate in Tasmanian high performance programs and Australian Netball league squad activities; and,
  • development opportunities for Tasmanian coaches, umpires, bench officials, administrators and staff (including Netball Tasmania board members).

Importantly, funding will be provided to support Netball Tasmania to assist them with establishing the Tasmanian Magpies team in the second-tier Australian Netball league. This presents another opportunity for Tassie players to compete on the national stage with a pathway to top level netball.

My Government has a strong commitment to investing in initiatives that increase participation in sport and recreation, because it helps to build a healthier community.

The partnership is worth $550,000 per year for the next three years, and funding will be included in the upcoming Revised Estimates Report.
