A key priority of the Hodgman Liberal Government is supporting Tasmanians in need, which is why we support Tasmania’s Neighbourhood and Community Houses and the important work they do to help Tasmanians build safer, stronger communities.
Minister for Human Services, Jacquie Petrusma joined Liberal Member for Bass, Sarah Courtney to officially open the Northern Suburbs Community Centre (NSCC).
“As the new centre is now at Newnham instead of Rocherlea, it makes access to all the community services delivered at NSCC far easier for the local community as it is closer to public transport,” Minister Petrusma said.
“The Hodgman Government knows the NSCC has been the heart of the northern suburbs community for over 25 years, which is why we committed $1.66 million for the construction of a new purpose built centre, built on land owned by Housing Tasmania.”
“Two Tasmanian firms designed and constructed the centre, ARTAS and Fairbrother, which will open up the potential for increased use with more space and new far superior facilities.”
Liberal Member for Bass, Sarah Courtney reiterated the importance of Neighbourhood Houses as a place which promotes social inclusion and a feeling of belonging for many Tasmanians.
“Neighbourhood Houses such as the NSCC create a sense of community for many in this State, as they bring people together under the one roof while also linking them to local services and support networks,” Ms Courtney said.
“Neighbourhood Houses are now better resourced than ever before. Funding includes over $6.35 million in 2017-18, which includes base funding and indexation, as well as the additional funding boost of $10,000 to 34 Neighbourhood Houses as announced last financial year, and another $15,000 for each Government- funded house in the current Budget.”
“The Government has also invested over $6 million in building works, which includes the $1.66 million for the construction of this new Northern Suburbs Community Centre here at Newnham.”
With the Budget back in balance, the Hodgman Liberal Government will continue to Build Your Future and provide record funding to Neighbourhood Houses, and investing in essential services to support Tasmanians in need.
