New headworks proposal to abolish charges will drive investment and create jobs

The Liberal Government's number one priority is jobs.  That's why we moved quickly and decisively to remove water and sewerage headworks charges for two years.

I'm encouraged that TasWater has put forward a new proposal to its owner councils.  The proposal would see water and sewerage headworks charges removed completely for most developments once our two year headworks holiday finishes.

There will be no additional cost to the Liberal Government under the proposal and if it's agreed to by the local government owners of TasWater, I will ask the Cabinet to consider incorporating it into our existing water and sewerage headworks policy.

We expect that the two year water and sewerage headworks holiday will bring forward up to $100 million in development and create up to 500 jobs.  If we can abolish water and sewerage headworks charges from most developments it will cut costs, encourage developers to invest in Tasmania and help create jobs.  It would also take Tasmania one step closer to achieving our goal of making Tasmania the most competitive place in Australia to do business.
