New Group Home to Help Tasmanians Living with Disability

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to providing improved services to Tasmanians with disability, including housing that meets individual needs.

Today, I was pleased to join the Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Eric Abetz, in officially opening a new group home at Geilston Bay that will provide supported accommodation for up to four residents living with disability.

With an onsite carer also providing security and support, this home has been designed to specifically cater for the needs of the residents.

The home is one of 120 new dwellings that Centacare Tasmania is delivering around the State under the Shovel Ready round of the Australian Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

The Tasmanian Government is providing in-kind support for a number of these projects, including this one at Geilston Bay, with the transfer of land.

For this project, Centacare has partnered with STAR Tasmania, which will lease the property and manage tenancies and disability support services.

Centacare and STAR worked together with Tasmanian construction company Wilson Homes in designing a home that best meets the needs of its future residents and we congratulate them on what they have delivered.

This really is another great example of how governments, the community sector and the private sector can work together to make a positive difference in the lives of members of our community who need our support.
The Government is working hard to address housing affordability and homelessness in Tasmania.

Our Affordable Housing Strategy, to be released later this year, will address housing needs and solutions for the next 10 years.
