New family violence education package

Every child deserves to live their life free of the threat of family violence, and to get the best education possible so they can succeed in life.

To help change community attitudes to family violence, schools play an important role in helping children recognise family violence, help make them aware of appropriate behaviours, and help them understand how to have positive and respectful relationships with others.

As part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s Safe Homes, Safe Families initiative, the Government is today launching the Respectful Relationships Education Package at Kings Meadows High School, to help students understand and build respectful relationships now and throughout their life.

Rolled out to all Tasmanian Government schools by the end of Term 1 2018, this set of resources will help children understand why family violence happens and how to reduce it happening in their home.

The Hodgman Government knows we can make real and positive change to the lives of children, by supporting them and their families and intervening before there is serious risk or harm to a child.

There is no higher priority than protecting our children, and to do this we need to change attitudes to family violence and increase awareness of the issue. Every child should be entitled to grow up in a safe and nurturing home, and to help Build Your Future we want to halve the cases of serious child abuse by 2022.

This package is in addition to the care and support already in place in Government schools and child and family centres, such as through the state-wide multi-agency Safe Families Coordination Unit, which helps coordinate support for victims of family violence along with Tasmania Police, while holding perpetrators to account.

More information about the Respectful Relationships Education package is available at respectfulrelationships.education.tas.gov.au.
