New Course to Start, Recruitment Open as Tasmania Police Rebuilding Continues

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to rebuilding Tasmania Police to help keep our community safe.

Our plan to restore the number of police officers to 1228, the level in place before the previous Labor-Green government's cuts, is on track.

The first Tasmania Police recruit course to get underway in 2015 will begin on Monday 13 April, with 20 trainees embarking on the intensive 28-week training program at the Police Academy at Rokeby.

From today, expressions of interest have officially opened for those wishing to pursue a career with Tasmania Police.

Those selected will attend further Recruit Training Courses this year and in 2016.

Meanwhile, the next graduation of 17 recruits tomorrow will take full-time equivalent police numbers to about 1150.

The Government has said that we cannot rebuild Tasmania Police overnight, but we are firmly committed to keeping our promise and delivering our plan.

We have a course graduating tomorrow, a course due to start soon and now expressions of interest are open for future courses.

Importantly, as we recruit new officers, we will be able to progressively rebuild and expand such specialist services as the Serious Organised Crime Unit, which will include a cold case investigative capability.

We want Tasmania Police to be recognised as being the best law enforcement agency in the country, and we are confident our efforts to rebuild the service will help achieve that vision.
