The Tasmanian majority Liberal Government is investing record amounts into improving infrastructure in our world-class national parks and today tenders are being called for a new public shelter at Ben Lomond.
The new entry point into the Ben Lomond Village will provide visitors with a heated enclosed space, public toilets and outdoor deck, and will be constructed to enhance the experience for those enjoying this Northern Tasmanian national park.
The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service is currently advertising for a lead consultant to design the new public shelter at Ben Lomond to replace the shelter that was destroyed by fire in 2018.
In recent years there has been increased interest in summer activities in the park with its walks, stunning wildflowers and rich variety of bird life, as well as the ever popular winter snowfield activities.
This new shelter will provide the creature comforts for the many new visitors and local Tasmanians alike. The project will also include concept plans for additional facilities and features that can be added to the shelter in time.
This is one of many projects to improve the visitor experience at Ben Lomond National Park and is part of a $31 million investment by the Tasmanian Liberal Government into our parks and improving infrastructure.
In October 2019, we announced the commencement of works to improve the safety of the Ben Lomond Road, including the section of road known as Jacobs Ladder.
This has included the widening and stabilising of road edges, replacement of wire rope barricading, installation of culverts and road surfacing, making it safer for drivers to navigate the road, particularly in the winter months.
A new visitor car park was also constructed last year with capacity for around 90 vehicles and an area for a shuttle bus service to operate and safely transport visitors to the summit in snow conditions.
Tenders are now being called to undertake design and planning for the Public Shelter. Documents are available at www.tenders.tas.gov.au. Submissions close on 18 March 2020.
