New Affordable Housing for Dads with Kids

As part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s $73.5 million Affordable Housing Action Plan, the Government is providing $2.5 million for supported accommodation for dads with kids - the first of its kind in Tasmania.

Recognising there are a growing number of single fathers caring for their children and the importance of supporting these families, the Tasmanian Government is providing specialised transitional accommodation to fill this gap in the housing market.

Already, as a result of this development and the services provided by Hobart City Mission, two dads have now regained full access to their children with this new secure, affordable accommodation.

Housing Tasmania has leased the complex to Hobart City Mission who will manage the site and provide wrap around support services to assist fathers to become healthy and confident role models who are able to look after themselves and their children independently.

The upgraded property consists of:

· Nine, two bedroom units

· Three indoor play areas, and

· A large secure common area which has been transformed with the inclusion of a sheltered BBQ area and outdoor playground.

A key priority of the Hodgman Liberal Government is supporting vulnerable Tasmanians in need, and with the Budget back in balance the Tasmanian Government is addressing affordable housing by implementing our $73.5 million Affordable Housing Action Plan, with innovative solutions to deliver affordable housing options for 1600 Tasmanian households.
