New Aboriginal curriculum resources for schools

The Hodgman Liberal Government is continuing to work to reset our relationship with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.

As previously announced by the Premier, an important part of the reset is to introduce a focus on Tasmanian Aboriginals into the history and culture component of the Australian Curriculum, taught in all our schools.

This will ensure this vital chapter in our history has a place on the bookshelf in every classroom and generations to come will have a greater understanding of our history.

I am pleased to announce that the first of these resources (five videos) are now available, to raise awareness and improve understanding of Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures in schools, and to raise aspirations for levels of attainment and further education for Aboriginal students.

This announcement is timely as we acknowledge our First Tasmanians in today’s recognition ceremony at Government House.

As Tasmania was previously the only state in Australia not to acknowledge Aboriginal people in its Constitution, our legislated amendments make a clear and significant statement of acknowledgement and recognition of the First Tasmanians.

During 2017, there will be a further roll out of curriculum resources for teachers to educate students about Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural resources, including Ochre and Stone Tools and Mutton Birding and Fibres.

The professional learning videos, with accompanying learning tasks, are now available from education.tas.gov.au .
