New $15 million education partnership to create job-ready Tasmanians

The Tasmanian Liberal Government will partner with the Beacon Foundation and the Paul Ramsay Foundation in a new $15 million investment in Tasmanian education to improve educational outcomes, strengthen schools extending to years 11 and 12, and create job-ready young Tasmanians.

Because we have put the budget back on track, it means we are now able to re-invest even more into essential services, such as education.

This is one of the largest public private partnership investments in Australian education and will enable Beacon to bring a collaborative education pilot to selected schools over the next five years, through the generosity of the Paul Ramsay Foundation, one of the country’s largest philanthropic organisations, which has committed $10 million to Beacon.

The Tasmanian Government will make a co-investment of $5 million and the funding will provide additional resources in specific schools in Tasmania with the greatest need, to generate partnerships and a shared vision for businesses and schools within a local community to support young people to succeed.

The pilot will encourage businesses and schools to assume collective responsibility for young people’s career development – working with My Education, the career and life planning curriculum already being implemented in Tasmanian Government schools.

Under this program, students will receive greater exposure to work through an industry focussed curriculum, undertake comprehensive work readiness development and receive additional job placements with a goal of helping 90 per cent of participating students complete Year 12.

This is a great example of what can be achieved when the budget is brought back under control and when the Government partners with innovative and committed organisations like Beacon.

The pilot will be evaluated by the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment.
