Neighbourhood House Week

It’s Neighbourhood House Week which is an ideal time to celebrate the important role Houses play in our communities, as well as reflect upon the theme of the week, ‘Bringing People Together – from your Neighbourhood to your Nation’.

Tasmania’s Neighbourhood Houses are the hearts of our local communities and promote social inclusion, community-led programs, and are every day ‘bringing people together’ in 35 communities across Tasmania.

This week, the Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania Board have also announced Tracey Tasker as their new CEO. I would like to wish Tracey all the best and I look forward to working constructively with her in her new role. She will have big shoes to fill as John Hooper leaves behind a strong legacy built over 11 years, and I wish John well in his new role.

The Hodgman Liberal Government proudly supports Neighbourhood Houses through an annual investment of $7.1 million.

This includes core funding for the 34 state-funded Houses, funding for Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania Inc. as the peak body, and additional commitments including:

  • an additional $45,000 per year, per house, to ensure the future viability of the network;
  • $2 million for further capital works; and
  • $150,000 to improve safety and security at the Houses.

Last year the Neighbourhood House network:

  • connected with an average of 494 people, per week, per House;
  • was supported by 1,767 volunteers statewide delivering 5,288 hours per week, averaging 54 volunteers and 160 hours per House; and
  • each week supported 7,696 people to participate in community activities, 3,419 people in skills and knowledge activities, with an average of 187 people per House engaged in health and wellbeing activities.

During Neighbourhood House Week each House will hold local events to bring volunteers, community and staff together with activities ranging from lunches to displays and demonstrations.

A major coordinated event will be held on Wednesday 8 May to celebrate unity of purpose and the hope generated by working together as communities.
