National Reconciliation Week- ‘Don’t Keep History A Mystery’

‘Don’t Keep History A Mystery’ is this year’s National Reconciliation Week (May 27 – June 3) theme and comes as an important reminder of the need for continued and concerted efforts towards reconciliation.

I hope all Tasmanians learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories during this National Reconciliation Week to help us grow as a State.

The Hodgman Liberal Government has taken significant steps towards reconciliation which includes constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people in Tasmania and introducing a new, more inclusive approach for eligibility.

We recognise employment and education are key to achieving reconciliation, which is why our next step includes providing $250,000 per annum to support a coordinated approach to employment in the State Service for Aboriginal people.

We have engaged with Tasmanian Aboriginal people in the management of our protected areas with seven “Working on Country” Trainee Rangers, who are now working with the Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS).

Our Tasmanian Histories and Cultures Framework, which will be delivered by State Government schools, will inform our next generation and lead to a greater understanding of how Aboriginal’s connect to country and culture.

We will also continue to work with Tasmanian Aboriginal people to build economic opportunity through tourism opportunities and joint land management arrangements, as seen in the successful wukalina Cultural Walk.

All these initiative will help to reconcile our past and our future.

The Hodgman Liberal Government will continue to work towards reconciliation with Tasmanian Aboriginal people to ensure we can achieve social, cultural and economic outcomes – while at the same time promoting a greater understanding and acceptance of Aboriginal culture.
