National Award for supporting electric vehicle uptake

Congratulations to the Tasmanian Climate Change Office (TCCO) for receiving the inaugural Kennedy Award at the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Sector Management in recognition of its work on the roll out of electric vehicles charging infrastructure.

In partnership with the Electric Vehicle Working Group, the TCCO has developed a coordinated approach to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Tasmania.

This is a key priority under Climate Action 21: Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan 2017-2021 and shows Tasmania is leading the nation on climate change action.

To date projects have focused on charging infrastructure, tailored programs to support fleets and community awareness, including:

• providing over $600,000 in grant funding to develop Australia’s first state-wide fast charging network, stimulating a total spend of over $2.5 million;
• providing tailored information, guidance and support to fleet managers to reduce their fleet costs and emissions, including consideration of electric vehicles through the Smarter Fleets Program; and
• Running community 'try an electric vehicle' events providing over 250 free electric vehicle test-drive experiences.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government’s Climate Action 21 is being implemented in partnership with all levels of government, non-government organisations, business and industry, the scientific community, peak organisations and the broader Tasmanian community.

The inaugural Kennedy Award was presented in honour of the late Kerry Kennedy, IPPA’s Awards Coordinator and champion of the Awards since their inception in 2002.
