Tasmania’s 2018 preliminary NAPLAN results released today show the Hodgman Liberal Government is delivering on our commitment to improve education results in Tasmania.
The results show Tasmania has improved in 6 assessments compared to the 2017 data, further building on the improvements seen in recent years.
More than 26,000 Tasmanian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from Government, Catholic and Independent schools completed the 2018 NAPLAN paper tests in Term 2, focusing on reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy.
The Government’s commitment to prioritise early years education is evident with today’s report showing that our Year 3 results remain strong.
We have worked hard to improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes of Tasmanian students with our record investment into education since coming to Government, and these results show those efforts are making a difference.
Tasmania’s strongest domain is reading, with an average mean score gap to Australia across all year levels of only 8 score points.
While these results are encouraging, we know that more needs to be done, particularly in the area of Year 5 writing, with Tasmania reflecting a national downward trend.
These results support the need for our significant investment in a new Tasmanian Literacy Strategy delivered by a Literacy Coach in every Tasmanian Government School. The Coaches will be employed as a part of our investment in 250 additional teachers in Tasmanian Government Schools over the next 6 years.
Tasmania commends the Education Council’s commitment to a valid, reliable, standardised and transparent national approach to measuring student performance, and NAPLAN reporting currently plays an important role in this context. We support the Council’s recent decision to conduct a limited review of how NAPLAN results are reported.
We know there is no better foundation for our future than education and the Hodgman Liberal Government will continue to put in place the right educational environment to allow our young people to thrive.
