NAPLAN Progress on Track

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to continuing to lift education standards, including improving literacy and numeracy, which is why we are investing record amounts in education.

Tasmania’s 2017 NAPLAN results released today show we remain on track to meet our goal of being at or above the national average on all NAPLAN measures by 2020.

Our students are consolidating solid progress that has been made since we came to Government in 2014 with improvements this year in 14 of the 20 assessments.

The Year 3 cohort recorded the strongest results with improvements across all domains reflecting the Tasmanian’s Government commitment to investing in the critical years.

Our Year 5 Numeracy results have also improved significantly over time.

It is pleasing to see that Tasmania’s performance is now similar to that of other Australian states.

While these results are positive, we recognise that an ongoing focus is needed to achieve our goal and we are committed to making the investments required to continue to lift our results.

Improving and strengthening practices for maintaining school attendance is part of the new Education Act and will ensure that students attend school every day and make steady progress with minimal learning disruptions.

As well as our strong focus on the early years including programs such as Launching into Learning (LiL) and Learning in Families Together (LIFT), Literacy and Numeracy Specialists and Coaches are also working collaboratively with students, teachers and principals in targeted schools across Years 7-9.

Today’s release of state-based results follow the NAPLAN testing conducted in Term 2, which was completed by more than 25,000 Tasmanian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from Government, Catholic and Independent schools.

Tasmanian schools will receive their NAPLAN results over the coming weeks, and parents will receive individual student reports in mid-August.
