MyHospitals Update – cost of hospital services

The Government commends staff at the Royal Hobart Hospital, and across the Tasmanian Health Service, on their tireless commitment to better patient care.

Data on hospital efficiency published on the MyHospitals website are more than three years old (2014-15).

Tasmanian Department of Health has advised that more recent data received from the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority shows that Tasmania’s overall cost of hospital care is the third most efficient of any state or territory in Australia.

Over the last few years, the  number of people receiving hospital care has grown significantly, as has hospital funding.

Last financial year, almost 12,500 more Tasmanians attended ED than three years ago, and 11,300 more people who attended the ED were admitted to hospital wards.

Of the increased admissions, more than 6,500 were for conditions recognised as high burden and high cost conditions, including:

  • an additional 1213 Cardiology  patients treated across the period, an increase of 23 per cent
  • an additional 435 Neurosurgery patients treated across the period, an increase of  39 per cent
  • an additional 2001 Respiratory Medicine patients treated across the period, an increase of 18 per cent

Tasmania’s clinicians and hospital staff have worked tireless to ensure this additional funding is directed to the frontline and are working constantly to improve not just the efficiency, but the quality of the care they provide.
