Improving education and career attainment is a key priority of the Hodgman Liberal Government and a new, more contemporary approach is helping to achieve this.
My Education is a supportive and inclusive approach to career education that will inspire and guide all students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
It supports students to identify their personal interests, values, strengths and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities.
My Education strengthens the approach to career education in schools and recognises that in a rapidly changing world, a whole-school approach integrated in the curriculum will better support our students in the future.
It is a partnership between parents, carers, the school and the community. It also aims to engage with business and industry in Tasmania by linking education with a student’s future employment options.
Today it was fantastic to see Grade 10 students from Montrose Bay High School participating in mock job interviews in their Performing Arts Centre as part of its dedicated My Education week.
Many local community organisations and businesses, such as MONA, Nyrstar and Life without Barriers, sent representatives who volunteered their time to run the mock job interviews with students.
The students get advice and are prepared for the formal interview and are expected to wear the full school uniform to make the experience as realistic as possible.
Students had the opportunity this week to connect with staff from Claremont College by taking part in career counselling sessions to explore the range of Year 11 and 12 subject choices.
Students have also had a real future focus this week by developing relationships with the University of Tasmania through campus visits and also hosting students and staff at the school.
This is an example of the type of activity and approaches that schools are taking with My Education and builds on the community, education and business partnership aspect of the program.
