Mother’s Day Classic 2016

This year I am again an Ambassador and MC for the Mother’s Day Classic annual fun run and walk in Hobart this Sunday, 8 May. I encourage Tasmanians to start this Mother’s Day by being active and raising vital funds for breast cancer research. Whether you walk, run, cheer or volunteer, you’re helping to fund essential research into prevention, detection, treatment and cure.

3000 participants are expected to gather at the Domain Athletics Centre for the Mother’s Day Classic, and this year organisers are hoping to reach a record $4 million in funds raised nationwide.

Organised by Women in Super, a national organisation of women working with and for not-for-profit superannuation funds, the event is the single largest donor to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer.

A unique highlight of this year’s event will be inspirational young Ruby Flynn who, at just nine years of age, plans to shave her hair on Sunday to raise funds for the Mother’s Day Classic after both her grandmother and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Mother’s Day Classic is not about crossing a finishing line. It is a celebration of hope that together we can contribute to making breast cancer history by funding life-changing research. It is also a fun, inspirational and healthy morning with family and friends, and an event I wouldn’t miss.

Since the event was initiated in 1998, five year survival rates of women diagnosed with breast cancer have increased, and now stand at 89% of those diagnosed.

There will be a minute of silence to pay tribute to loved ones lost to cancer before the start of each event.

The 8km run starts at 8:45am and the 4km walk and run at 10am, however warm-ups from the stage area will be held for both events 30 minutes prior.
