More support for migrant communities

The State Government recognises there are demonstrated cultural and economic benefits in attracting more migrants to Tasmania, and it has a plan to help foster a rich and culturally diverse community in the State.

Today I can proudly announce the State Government will provide $200 000 over four years to support the management of the former Moonah Arts Centre as it transforms into a thriving Multicultural Hub.

This funding comes in addition to the government’s contribution of $100 000 towards the development of Glenorchy City Council’s Multicultural Community Spaces Plan that was released earlier this month.

That plan identified the ‘old MAC’ as the ideal site for multicultural events catering for up to 200 people. There is currently no dedicated facility where multicultural groups can integrate with each other, meet socially, integrate with other cultures and hold community and sporting activities.

This funding commitment will ensure that changes from 2017.

The City of Glenorchy is one of the most culturally diverse local government areas in Tasmania. In West Moonah alone, 17.8% of people speak a language other than English in the home compared to an average of 4.5% across the State.

As a member for Denison, I will continue this work with the Glenorchy City Council to see the space transformed into a successful and important hub for migrants that also enriches the wider Tasmanian community.
