More disaster recovery funding for flood affected areas

Liberal Senator for Tasmania Jonathan Duniam and Tasmanian Treasurer Peter Gutwein have welcomed today’s announcement of additional disaster funding after the Tasmanian storms and floods in June 2016.

Senator Duniam said the disaster assistance of nearly $14 million, bring provided through the  Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) and matched by the Tasmanian Government,  will help provide access to important national parks and reserves as well as stabilising the Beaconsfield Hart Shaft.

“Tasmania’s parks and reserves are unique natural and cultural assets that attract locals and tourists alike, and this funding will allow us to get on with the job of restoring full access to these important destinations,” Senator Duniam said.

“I have strongly advocated for Tasmania to be considered for funding under the NDRRA, and this great result is another demonstration of how the Australian and Tasmanian Governments are working together to benefit the state.”

Tasmanian Treasurer Peter Gutwein said the funding would allow repairs to be advanced for some of Tasmania’s most important roads and tourism infrastructure in the state’s north and northwest.

“The disaster funding will cover clean up and repairs for tourism hotspots such as the Marakoopa Caves, Meander Falls Road and Meander Falls Walking Track, Fortescue Bay boat ramp and jetty, and the Warrawee Reserve,” Mr Gutwein said.

“The stabilisation of the Beaconsfield Hart Shaft will also allow the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre to reopen, allowing access to an iconic part of Tasmania’s heritage and an important economic asset for the township of Beaconsfield.”

A full list of projects eligible for assistance is below.  Further information on disaster assistance is available at disasterassist.gov.au and http://alert.tas.gov.au/Pages/Home.aspx .
