Tasmanians living with mental illness, their families and carers are set to benefit from a new plan launched today to expand and grow the mental health peer workforce.
Strengthening the presence of peer workers with a lived experience of mental illness is part of our strong commitment to ensure Tasmanians can receive the right care and support they need, at the right place and at the right time.
This includes from prevention and early intervention through to treatment and support.
In partnership with the Mental Health Council of Tasmania, the Government has developed the Peer Workforce Development Strategy, supporting our shared goal to encourage and increase the engagement of peer workers across the State.
We are also committed to expanding the roles of peer workers across the Tasmanian mental health sector.
The unique insights of peer workers, which are derived from their own lived experiences with mental ill-health and recovery, help to improve outcomes for people who access services, their families, friends and carers.
The peer workforce also provides further opportunities for people with a lived experience to join the mental health workforce.
The strategy is the first of its kind in Tasmania, and comes as a key action of the Government’s Rethink Mental Health plan.
The Hodgman majority Liberal Government provided funding for the Mental Health Council of Tasmania to develop the strategy, including opportunities, priorities, actions, and initiatives to sustain the peer workforce into the future.
