The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community to address family violence.
This morning I was pleased to host a breakfast attended by a range of people from across business, government and the community sector, with special guest Rosie Batty, 2015 Australian of the Year.
Our focus today was on the role of men in preventing violence against women.
Living free from violence is everyone’s right and taking action to prevent it is everyone’s responsibility.
Men have a crucial role to play in speaking out against family violence and providing positive role models for young men and boys.
Attendees this morning heard of Ms Batty’s personal experiences, and also from Tasmanian men who are helping to lead the fight in tackling family violence.
Many Tasmanian politicians, business and community leaders are White Ribbon Ambassadors, men who recognise the importance of men taking responsibility and playing a leadership role in preventing men’s violence against women.
All men can play their part as fathers, brothers and friends by speaking out against family violence.
Addressing this appalling social epidemic is a key priority of the Government.
Our Family Violence Action Plan to be released this month will be aimed at ensuring that everyone understands that family violence is utterly unacceptable, empowering those affected and ensuring they have the help and support that they need.
As the Premier has said, it is the Government’s clear intention that additional funding support will be provided to begin implementing the recommendations of the Action Plan when that work has been completed.
