Freycinet is one of the absolute jewels in Tasmania’s crown.
Locals and visitors alike are flocking to the area to discover for themselves why this is not just one of the country’s great regions, but one of the world’s most stunning areas.
This year, we expect visitor numbers to top 300,000 for the first time ever, making it one of the State’s visitor hotspots.
Last year, Freycinet won bronze at the Australian Tourism Awards in the major attraction category, and the sky’s the limit as far as this region of Tasmania is concerned.
We must properly plan and invest in infrastructure to ensure a sustainable future for Freycinet, that’s why the Hodgman Government has set aside $50,000 this year to develop a comprehensive master plan for tourism infrastructure for the area.
The Hodgman Government is also investigating options to improve the Wineglass Bay access road in readiness for the coming summer season. Approximately $100,000 will be set aside from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund in the upcoming 2017-18 Budget to address urgent road and parking issues that have already been identified.
Today I am in Freycinet to meet with the community, local government, the tourism industry and the area’s business community as part of developing a Freycinet Master Plan.
The Master Plan will consider everything from transport logistics and water supply through to sewerage management and is vital to ensure that we can sustainably manage this very sensitive area and is a vital step to ensure that we can continue to showcase the area and improve on what’s on offer.
The Master Plan will provide Government, the community and local businesses with a clear investment strategy that will deliver for the entire Freycinet and Coles Bay region.
The Hodgman Government will be working with a steering group that includes East Coast Tourism, Parks and Wildlife, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, and the Freycinet Tourism Group.
The Hodgman Government is committed to ensuring the Freycinet area remains one of Tasmania’s enduring icons.
