The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is committed to resetting our relationship with the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, to improve their social, cultural and economic outcomes, while also promoting greater understanding and acceptance of Aboriginal culture.
I’m delighted to attend the Mannalargenna Day celebrations at the Tebrakunna Visitors Centre at Cape Portland in the far north east of Tasmania.
The Government has allocated funding of $10,000 towards the cost of putting on this event.
On what marks 183 years since his passing, Mannalargenna Day is an all-day and evening event, celebrated annually to commemorate the life of Mannalargenna; a warrior and Chief of the Pairrebeenne clan, Tebrakunna Country.
The event is hosted by the melythina tiakana warrana Aboriginal Corporation which was established in early 2008 when Aboriginal people from the north east area came together and agreed to preserve custodianship and pass on cultural traditions, practices and knowledge of the North-East’s First Nations people.
This year’s event marks the fourth Mannalargenna Day celebration, with numbers growing significantly every year.
Mannalargenna Day is an important opportunity for his many descendants and the wider community to learn about, and celebrate local Aboriginal culture, their connection to country and of significant Aboriginal people in Tasmania’s history through cultural performances and dances, workshop’s, food, walks, tours, storytelling and discovery sessions.
The Tebrakunna Visitors Centre will also be open as part of the celebrations offering informative displays about the traditional landowners, the history of the Cape Portland property, the wind farm and the maritime and mining history of the north-east region.
