Over the past few days I have been inundated with complaints about Hobart City Council’s decision to axe the annual Christmas carols.
Gathering in St David’s Park and other recent locations as a community was one of the best events of the year and it would be a shame to see this great community event lost.
There are other examples of successful Christmas carol events right around Tasmania. I think one of the best models is the Launceston City Council model. The Council itself provides a small financial contribution, but helps bring together the business community, who either contribute financially or provide services in-kind to help put on a great community event for families.
I have written today to the Hobart City Council, offering to facilitate a meeting between the Hobart City Council and the Hobart business community to discuss options for retaining the St David’s Park Christmas carols event.
I know there is a lot of goodwill out there in the business and broader community for this event to go ahead and I hope the Hobart City Council accepts my offer.
This event is far too important to the community to lose. I hope that we can all work together so that this truly special Hobart event has a long-term future.
