The Lunar New Year Festival is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Tasmania’s Chinese community and its enormous contribution to the cultural fabric of our state.
Now in its fourth year, the festival showcases the diverse culture, heritage and traditions of Tasmania’s Chinese community.
This year, we celebrate the Year of the Monkey, a year we can all look forward to with the promise of adventure, resolve and innovation.
Premier Will Hodgman said, “Chinese culture has been part of the Tasmanian community since migrants from China first began arriving here in the 1800's".
"But our connections have never been stronger then now, particularly since the historic visit of President Xi, and record numbers of Chinese tourists and students coming to our state.
“This wonderful festival gives Tasmanians an opportunity to sample, and gain a greater appreciation of Chinese culture.
House of Assembly Speaker Elise Archer said she was pleased to the see the community making the most of Parliament’s beautiful lawns.
“It is wonderful to see so many people from different cultural backgrounds and walks of life celebrating the Chinese New Year here today.
“I am very pleased the Tasmanian Government is able to support the Lunar New Year festival by providing $4,000 from the Community Participation and Appeals Fund to the Chinese Community Association of Tasmania.
“I congratulate the Chinese Community Association of Tasmania on the growing success of the Lunar New Year Festival.”
