Local legends revealed as 2018 Commonwealth Games batonbearers

Some of Tasmania’s best and brightest are set to become part of Australian sporting history, chosen to be part of a 3800 strong team of baton bearers for the 2018 Queen's Baton Relay.

The traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games will see the baton make the 230,000 kilometre journey from Buckingham Palace to the Gold Coast via Tasmania in February.

Among those selected is 12-year-old Campbell Remess who made headlines last year when he turned his passion for sewing into a rewarding hobby, making around 800 bears for sick children at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

55-year-old Jodi Harrison will also take part in the relay. Ms Harrison has dedicated her life to helping young children, teaching them the importance of water safety and more recently working with special needs students from several schools across the state.

Speaker of the House of Assembly and Liberal Member for Lyons, Mark Shelton said he was impressed with the calibre of the 2018 nominations and congratulated those chosen to represent the state.

“On behalf of the Tasmanian Government, I congratulate all those who were nominated and encourage everyone to get involved and cheer on our local batonbearers when they visit.”
