Local Human Rights Champions Recognised

Since 1991, the Tasmanian Human Rights Awards have been held during Human Rights Week to recognise those who have demonstrated excellence in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Human Rights Week and the Awards are co-ordinated by ‘A Fairer World’, a community organisation that provides ways for schools, workplaces and the Tasmanian community to learn, connect and act together for positive social change.

There are nine categories for the 2016 Awards across various groups and sectors including multicultural, LGBTI, mental health and young persons.

I congratulate the following winners who received their well-deserved awards at Parliament House today:

  • A Fairer World School Award: Riverside Primary SchoolHigh Commendation: Wynyard High School
  • Youth Award: Kobe Bennett      High Commendation: Keren Scotney
  • Multicultural Award: Students Against Racism
  • LGBTI Award: PFLAG Tasmania
  • Individual Award: Besta Poni Peter & Denise Delphin
  • Organisation Award: Big hART
  • Lucy Henry Mental Health Award: Browns SUPA IGA
  • Robin Hood AM Sport Award High Commendation: Netball Tasmania
  • Angus Downie Print Journalism Award: Doug Dingwall

The Tasmanian Government is keen to foster a rich, culturally diverse and socially harmonious community and I encourage all Tasmanians to support the various Human Rights Week activities that are being held around the State.
