Local Government elections

The Hodgman Government is working closely with the Local Government Association of Tasmania in the lead up to the 2018 local government elections.

I would encourage all eligible voters to have their say.  Ratepayers and residents have not just the opportunity but the responsibility to elect the representatives they want to guide the future of their municipality.

Recently, LGAT has requested that the Government consider changing the level of candidate election expenditure as this will be the first election that posters and brochures, including their distribution will be reported on in terms of election expenses.

LGAT has requested that candidates in the larger municipalities of Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart, Kingborough and Launceston are able to spend a maximum of $16,000 on their campaign.

LGAT has also requested that spending thresholds for candidates in all other municipalities should be increased to $10,000.

The Government has agreed to both requests and regulations will be updated before the commencement of the October 2018 local government elections.
