Liberal Government to implement mandatory sentences for serious sexual offences against children

The Liberal Government will get tough on anyone who commits a serious sexual offence against a child.

Under new laws that are being developed the Liberal Government will make sure that there is a minimum mandatory prison sentence for anyone found guilty of committing a serious sexual offence against a child.

The Liberals have long been on the record calling for tougher laws, but the previous Labor-Green Government refused to act.  We took our plan for mandatory sentences to the people at the election and the people spoke overwhelmingly.

We intend to keep all of our election commitments, including this one.

Formal consultation will commence shortly with the aim of introducing new laws as soon as possible.
