With female sport participation in AFL and cricket at an all-time high, the Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to ensuring girls and women have access to the facilities they need.
That’s why we will invest $10 million over the next two years to upgrade female sports facilities across the state.
This is by far the largest investment per capita in girls and women's facilities by any State or Territory government. It proudly shows my government's commitment to women's sport.
Audits conducted by AFL Tasmania and Cricket Australia found approximately 80 per cent of their facilities failed to be female friendly, despite more than 20,700 females taking part in their sports.
The Levelling the Playing Field Grant Program will provide more appropriate change rooms, lockers, toilets, shower facilities and amenities for female coaches, officials, volunteers and players.
This competitive grants program will provide for a minimum funding amount of $15,000 and a maximum funding amount of $1 million per project.
Priority will be given to facilities used for football and cricket but all sports and their organisations are welcome to apply.
Priority will also be given to projects which can demonstrate dollar for dollar matching funding as well as contributions from their respective sporting codes.
I am committed to removing barriers for more female participation in sport and it’s about time our facilities were up to scratch.
Tasmanian girls and women deserve a level playing field and I am thrilled to be providing an opportunity which encourage more females to take part in sport.
Applications open today and can be made at http://www.dpac.tas.gov.au/divisions/csr/grants_and_community_engagement/levelling_the_playing_field_grants_program/
