The Hodgman Liberal Government will today table legislation to ensure that camper vans, such as those operated by Wicked Campers and which display deeply offensive signage, are not allowed on Tasmanian roads.
The legislation will allow vehicles to be deregistered if they are found to not meet advertising standards, and where the owner has not rectified the cause.
There is no doubt that some of the slogans on these vans are completely unacceptable, and clearly promote negative attitudes to women.
There is no ability for parents to prevent their children from seeing the slogans, and as a man with strong family values, I am personally incensed.
In this week where we mark International Women’s Day, we need to make a strong statement that we as a society reject misogyny, and that’s exactly what we are doing.
Any person that sees a camper they believe is offensive will be able to make a complaint and if that complaint is upheld against the advertising code, then the Registrar of Motor Vehicles will be able to cancel the registration of the vehicle.
The message is clear to any company wishing to operate its hire and drive vehicles with offensive slogans in Tasmania.
Clean up your act, or we will clean it up for you.
