Launch of Seniors Week 2018

Today’s launch of Seniors Week 2018 (October 15 to 21) on International Day of Older Persons kick starts an important statewide program of events that aims to promote healthy ageing, while providing wonderful opportunities to celebrate older people and at the same time, facilitating community participation and connection.

This year’s theme is Food, Glorious Food, which is very appropriate given Tasmania’s reputation for having some of the finest produce, best variety and most delicious food in the nation.

The Hodgman Liberal Government funds Council On The Ageing (COTA) Tasmania as a peak body to coordinate Seniors Week, acknowledging the vital role COTA plays in advocating for, and supporting older members of our communities.

Nearly 600 events will be held across the State during Seniors Week 2018 that will provide opportunities to celebrate older Tasmanians and ageing, while having fun, making new friends and sharing some of Tasmania’s finest food.

The Hodgman Government has funded COTA to help implement initiatives under the Active Ageing Plan as part of the Government's Strong, Liveable Communities: Tasmania's Active Ageing Plan 2017-2022. This year’s theme fits in well with one of the key priorities of the Plan - to provide information and programs about affordable, healthy eating.

Other ways we are supporting seniors include:

  • giving one year’s free access to our National Parks and heavily discounted passes for future years;
  • slashing stamp duty by 50% for eligible seniors looking to sell their existing home and downsize; and
  • a wide range of concessions and discounts on the cost of government services such as bus travel, electricity  and adult education.

Seniors are an amazing source of knowledge and expertise in the community, and Seniors Week 2018 is an opportunity to celebrate seniors and the numerous benefits they bring to our state.

The Seniors Week Program is available from a range of outlets across the State including Service Tasmania shops, local government offices and COTA Tasmania’s website at www.cotatas.org.au.
