As the holiday season approaches, Tasmania Police officers will once again be making a concerted effort through Operation Crossroads to deter the dangerous behaviours that too often result in tragedy.
The Government is committed to working with the community to reduce the road toll through our Towards Zero vision, but road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
There will be more police on our roads thanks to our commitment to increasing police numbers, so if you do the wrong thing, you will be caught.
Last Christmas period saw one fatality and 20 serious injuries as a result of crashes on our roads, meaning the holiday period was ruined for not just those people, but all their friends and family as well.
This time of year means more people on the roads, and I strongly urge all road users to be accountable for their behaviour on the road at all times.
In particular, data from the last five years says that alcohol is a contributing factor in around 20 per cent of fatalities on the road, so the message is simple- if you’re having a few drinks, don’t put your life and others at risk by driving and possibly being over the limit.
Operation Crossroads will run from Friday 23 December 2016 until Sunday 1 January 2017.
