The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to reducing fatal and serious crashes on our roads through our Towards Zero vision.
Today marks the start of National Road Safety Week for 2016, a time to reflect on those lives lost on our roads and to reinforce key road safety messages.
Emergency services vehicles will display a yellow ribbon for the Week as a reminder to ‘drive so others survive’ and to remember those killed or injured and their families.
We should never accept that death and serious injuries on our roads are inevitable, and it’s the responsibility of all road users to ensure they act in a responsible and safe manner on our roads.
Education and enforcement are crucial parts of the road safety equation as well.
This year, Tasmania Police will be focusing each day of National Road Safety Week from Monday to Friday on one of the ‘fatal five’- not wearing a seatbelt or failing to use a child restraint, speeding and not driving to the conditions, inattention and distraction, driving tired, and driving while affected by alcohol or drugs.
Tasmania Police will align their enforcement and marketing activities with the ‘fatal five’ focus for each particular day, with specific actions including public education through social media, targeted covert operations, and high visibility patrols.
It’s important to remember that while a fine and loss of demerit points may be a significant penalty, losing your life is a much worse fate.
It’s up to everyone on the road to ensure they heed the road safety messages not just this week, but every time they sit behind the wheel.
On behalf of the Government, and everyone who is committed to improving road safety in this State, I urge all Tasmanians to get behind National Road Safety Week.
