Latest Housing Report indicates Plan is on track

The latest Quarterly Housing Report, released today, shows that the Hodgman Liberal Government is on track to assist over 1,600 additional households by June 2019, including new supply of 941 affordable lots and homes.

Under the Government’s Affordable Housing Action Plan 2015-2019, we are progressing important initiatives to provide more affordable homes to Tasmanians in need, and meeting targets to increase home ownership, unlock more land for new homes, and provide more social housing.

As at the end of December 2018, we have assisted a total of 1,082 new households, including:

  • 312 households have been assisted into affordable home ownership;
  • 194 affordable land lots have been released;
  • 236 new social housing dwellings have been constructed;
  • 228 households have been assisted into affordable private rentals; and
  • 110 new units of homeless accommodation have been provided.

Whilst we recognise the current challenges in the market, it is pleasing to see home ownership numbers increasing. We are focused on increasing the supply of affordable homes through our Action Plans to help families buy their first home through our Home Share program, first home owners grant, and extending other housing initiatives such as stamp duty relief for first home buyers and pensioners wanting to downsize.

Our Affordable Housing Action Plan 2015-2019 builds upon support the Government already provides to Tasmanians in need. Tasmania provides subsidised social housing for around 12,000 households every day, and on average around 300 households are assisted with affordable private rentals each month through our Private Rental Assistance program delivered by Housing Connect.

While we are meeting our targets, we realise that there is still more work to do, which is why we are investing an additional $125 million as part of Stage Two of our Affordable Housing Strategy, which will be released at the end of March 2019.
