Labor’s White Paper response – close the Mersey Emergency Department

The latest thought-bubble from Labor complaining about our decision to keep the Mersey Emergency Department open demonstrates once again that that they have no Plan to fix the health system they broke while in Government.

Our White Paper released this week confirms that the Mersey Community Hospital is retaining a 24-hour Emergency Department.

This is welcome news to people in the North West, but apparently not to the Labor Party.

People on the North West were bemused to see on the news last night Labor’s health spokesperson Rebecca White holding a press conference in Hobart questioning why the Mersey is retaining a 24-hour Emergency Department.

If Labor’s position is that the Mersey ED should no longer be open 24 hours, their leader Bryan Green should have the guts to say so, in his own electorate of Braddon.

Once again, Mr Green and Ms White have made a fundamental mistake in their understanding of health issues and are using their own lack of understanding to try and undermine a positive solution for patients.

We are very pleased that the extensive consultation and investigations undertaken over recent months have delivered a guaranteed future for the Mersey as home of the state’s dedicated elective surgery centre, as well as retaining local hospital services such as a 24-hour ED.

These things aren’t mutually exclusive, and if Labor thinks they are then let’s hear from Bryan Green which one they would shut down.
